Increased occurrence of 3-MCPD in oils and crisps

During August and September, there was a rise in rapid alerts for 3-monochloropropanediol (3-MCPD), 2-monochloropropanediol (2-MCPD), and their fatty acid esters, as well as glycidyl fatty acid esters. These are contaminants that can occur during the production and processing of food.

For 3-MCPD and its esters, as well as glycidyl fatty acid esters, maximum levels for infant formulae, follow-on formulae, and foods for special medical purposes for infants and young children have already been established, along with oils and fats (as regulated in EU Regulation 915/2023).

However, discussions are currently underway to reduce the existing maximum levels for 3-MCPD and its esters in infant and follow-on formulae and new maximum levels for compound foods are being considered.

We are committed to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the food industry to ensure that your products comply with current regulations.

Our team of experts will analyse your food for 3-MCPD, so you can be sure it meets legal compliance.
