Accredited foreign object detection & analysis according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025

Although food companies take far-reaching quality assurance measures, foreign body findings are not uncommon at all stages of food production. In order to avoid safety risks and economic damage, reliable foreign body detection is therefore indispensable. Once such an occurrence has been detected, it is important to identify the foreign body precisely, because this is the only way to assess its relevance for product safety so that the right quality assurance measures can be initiated.

Depending on the nature of the foreign body, identification may be difficult without modern analytics. The ifp Institut für Produktqualität is your competent laboratory partner for the accredited examination of foreign bodies.

Our experts have many years of experience in the identification of foreign bodies of all types. Each sample is tested individually with analytical passion, because we have the claim to solve each "case" in the best possible way. In terms of methods, we use in particular stereo microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The latter is often coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to identify the elemental composition. In addition, various qualitative, wet-chemical analyses are used. If necessary, a variety of other sample-specific analytical methods are also available at ifp. By means of comparative analyses with customer-specific or ifp's own reference materials, foreign bodies can be identified and assigned to individual origins in the case of several similar possible origins.

Foreign body samples identified so far include metals, glass, salts, plastics, wood, teeth, bones, dental prostheses, rocks, building materials, hair, plant, animal and insect fragments, food/allergens and moulds.

For each foreign body sample, the examinations carried out are described in detail, with illustrations, in an understandable and comprehensible way in a report.
