New maximum levels for ochratoxin A

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium. The contaminant is mainly formed during insufficient drying and improper storage of cultivated plants.

The European Contaminants Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 already stipulates maximum levels for OTA in certain product groups. Regulation (EU) 2022/1370 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 lowers maximum levels and sets new limits for the following product groups.

The new maximum levels apply from 01.01.2023. Food that is legally placed on the market before 01.01.2023 may remain on the market until the date of minimum durability or use-by-date.
